Whether you are just learning to play the guitar or are a pro, you still have to tune your guitar from time to time. More importantly, for the newbie anyhow, you have to know how to tune your guitar. Being in the newbie category, I was a bit unsure how to tune my guitar so I found Jamorama Guitar tuner pro a great help.
A part of the Jamorama course you get the tuner pro software and a PDF guide on how to tune your guitar. The PDF guide pretty much explains all the terms and jargon involved in tuning your guitar. It also goes into the various alternatives you can use to tune your guitar.
In the case of the Jamorama course the best way is to run the software. When you run the software you are given the option to tune a guitar or a bass guitar. For the guitar there are various options. The course recommends that you tune your guitar to the standard open E. This is the first option in the software so go ahead an use this one.
The method employed by the software is to listen to the sounds that the software makes for a certain string and then try to replicate this sound with the same string on your guitar. I was surprised how much easier it was than I was expecting to get sounds similar.
The software shows you a diagram of the guitar neck with 6 or 12 strings depending on your selection. Beside each string is the letter of the note that you have to tune the string to. By putting the mouse cursor over a particular string in the diagram the note will be strummed twice. By listening to this note and then strumming the same string on your guitar you can adjust the string to make the same sound. The course goes into how you adjust the strings using the tuning machine heads. Although this is fairly obvious once you turn a head one way or the other. Do this with all the strings and you have your guitar tuned. Simple as that.
The course recommends that you get used to tuning your guitar by tuning it before you start a lesson or start to play it. In this way you get used to tuning and get an ear for how it should sound.
