Taking A Beginner Guitar Lesson

April 1st, 2009 · No Comments

A beginner guitar lesson can get you started on the road to learning to play the guitar well. Despite the fact that the guitar is a popular instrument and one that many people want to play, it is not easy to learn how to play it without some form of instruction.

Guitar instruction can take many forms these days thanks to multimedia and the internet. You can get your first lesson from a DVD or video. You can get your instruction by watching videos on the internet. Or you can even get a human instructor or teacher.

You’d have to say that having a human teacher is the best option in the long run. In fact you often find that many successful professional musicians have a parent, sibling or family member that encouraged them and taught them to learn an instrument. The human touch works because you can really connect with a person and ask them questions that you can’t of a DVD. You develop a relationship with them and they can motivate you.

So what might a beginner guitar lesson involve.

What You Will Learn

This depends on the teacher and their method but it is safe to say that the first lesson will run you through the basics. This means getting to grips with much new terminology. So you will run through the names for various parts of the guitar. When you learn anything new, there is often a whole new vocabulary that you will have to know to communicate and understand what other people are talking about so this knowledge is vital.

You will also get a feel for a guitar. Maybe you have your own guitar or you are using a school guitar. You will be show how to hold the guitar and some basic but key skills like tuning the guitar.

While these may seem like silly, simple things, all are important if you plan on learning how to play guitar properly.

In addition to the basics, in your beginner guitar lesson you will learn about guitar chords and tabs. You may not know this until you take your beginner guitar lesson, but guitarists have created their own set of readable music. Instead of the normal sheet music, guitarists have their own tablature. A tablature staff for the guitar has six horizontal lines. Each of these lines stands for a string on the guitar. The very bottom string represents your “E” string, which is the lowest string on your guitar. The second line from the bottom is your “A” string, the third line from the bottom is your “D” string, etc. There are numbers located in the middle of the lines or strings. These numbers show you the fret that the tablature is showing you to play. You will also learn that the number zero means to play open string. A beginner guitar lesson will help you to learn all of this by actually doing it hands on. It is easier to understand how to read guitar tabs if you take a beginner guitar lesson and have someone showing it to you.

A beginner guitar lesson will also help you learn how to actually physically strum the guitar correctly. You will also learn how to properly hold the frets.
